Valentine Wightman

WIGHTMAN, Valentine, clergyman, born in North Kingston, Rhode Island, in 1681; died in Groton, Connecticut, 9 June, 1747. He was a descendant of Edward Wightman, the Baptist, who was burned for heresy in Lichfield, England, in 1612. After his ordination to the ministry in Rhode Island he removed in 1705 to Groton, Connecticut He was the first Baptist minister in Connecticut, planted in Groton the first church of that denomination, and was active in establishing other churches throughout the state and in the city and state of New York. He was a scholarly man, as was evinced in a famous debate that he held at Lynn in 172'7 with the Reverend John Bulkley, a minister of the standing order. The discussion was subsequently published. Mr. Wightman was also the author of a "Letter on singing Psalms" (1725).
