Thomas J. C. Amory

AMORY, Thomas J. C., soldier, born in Massachusetts about 1830; died of yellow fever in Newbern, North Carolina, 8 October 1864. He was graduated at West Point in 1851, and served on garrison and frontier duty in the Utah expedition (1858-'60), and on recruiting service until 1861, when he •became colonel of the 17th Massachusetts volunteers. He was stationed at Baltimore with his regiment until March 1862, when he was ordered to North Carolina and took part in the operations about Newbern, Beaufort, Goldsboro, and Kinston, until 1 March 1864, when he was assigned to a general command of the forces south of the Trent river, and on 5 July to the sub-district of Beaufort. He was promoted to be major 19 September and was brevetted Brigadier-General of volunteers 1 October.
