SHORTER, John Gill, governor of Alabama, born in Jasper county, Georgia, in 1818; died in Eufalau, Alabama, 29 May, 1872. He was graduated at the University of Georgia in 1837, and soon afterward began the practice of law in Eufaula, Alabama In 1842 he was appointed state's attorney, and he subsequently was a member of both branches of the legislature. He was appointed circuit judge in 1852, and continued in this office for nine years. At the beginning of the civil war he was appointed commissioner from Alabama to Georgia, and in 1861 he was a member of the provisional Confederate congress. In the same year he was elected governor of the state, serving till 1863. He was an active member of the Baptist denomination.
