GARNEAU, Francois Xavier, Canadian author, born in Quebec, 15 June, 1809; died 3 February, 1866. He was educated at Quebec seminary, studied law, and was admitted as a notary in 1830. Subsequently he became clerk of the legislative assembly, member of the council of public instruction, and City clerk of Quebec, which office he held from 1845 till his death. He was an honorary member of literary and historical societies in the United States and Canada, and for several years president of the Institut Canadien of Quebec. He wrote "Histoire du Canada, depuis sa decouverte jusqu' nos jours" (3 vols., Quebec, 2d ed., 1852, also translated into English); and "Voyage en Angle-terre et en France dans les anndes 1831, '32, '33."
