Fitch Poole

POOLE, Fitch, journalist, born in Danvers, Massachusetts, 13 June, 1803; died in Peabody, Massachusetts, 19 August, 1873. He received a common-school education, was connected with the press for many years, and edited the Danvers "Wizard" from its establishment in 1859 till 1868. Mr. Poole was the founder of the Mechanics' institute library, which afterward became the Peabody institute, and he was its librarian from 1856 till his death. He was in the legislature in 1841-'2, and held several local offices. He was the author of numerous satirical ballads that attained popularity, the best known of which was "Giles Corey's Dream."
