Daniel Hitchcock

HITCHCOCK, Daniel, soldier, born in Rhode Island in 1741; died in Morristown, New Jersey, in January, 1777. He was graduated at Yale in 1761, practised law in Providence, Rhode Island, and was lieutenant-colonel of militia. In the beginning of the Revolution he enlisted in the Continental army, and commanded a Rhode Island regiment at the siege of Boston, and a brigade at Princeton, although he was far advanced in the disease from which he afterward died. On the battle-field of the latter engagement General Washington took him by the hand, and in the presence of the army thanked him for his gallant service.
