BAKER, Benjamin Franklin, musician, born in Wenham, Massachusetts, 10 July 1811. He studied music, and began to teach in 1831. In 1839-'47 he was musical director in Dr. Channing's Church in Boston, and ill 1841 he inaugurated a series of successful musical conventions. From 1842 to 1848 he was superintendent of musical instruction in the grammar schools, and met 8,000 pupils a week. He introduced music into the public schools of Lowell and Lawrence, became editor of the Boston "Musical Journal," and, from its foundation in 1857, was principal of the Boston music school.
